You’re planning a move overseas, or maybe a longer trip with your pet, and sorting out flights for yourself is one thing. But throw a pet into the mix, and suddenly there’s a whole other layer of questions, paperwork, and quiet panic that most people just weren’t prepared for.

So here’s the big question: can your pet actually travel on the same flight as you? The short answer is yes, in many cases they can, but the longer answer involves a few things worth understanding before you start booking anything.

Here at Airport Pets, we specialise in international pet transport, and getting your pet booked on the same aircraft as you is very much part of what we do.

A Few Things Worth Knowing First

Most pet owners either assume this whole process is dead simple, or they go the other way and convince themselves it’s an absolute nightmare to sort out. The reality? It’s neither.

It really comes down to a handful of factors: the airline you’re on, your destination country, what size your pet is, and what breed. Getting this wrong doesn’t just mean inconvenience; it can mean your pet gets bumped off the flight entirely or ends up in a situation that wasn’t planned for. Sorting this out early, ideally well before the travel date, makes a great difference.

Getting Your Pet on Your International Flight

Most international airlines that operate out of New Zealand allow pets to travel as manifest cargo on the same flight as their owner, provided everything is arranged properly in advance. The key phrase here is “in advance”. You can’t just show up at Auckland International and expect to add a pet to the cargo hold at the last minute. Pet bookings on flights need to be locked in well before your travel date, and the documentation you’ll need changes quite a bit depending on where you’re headed.

Heading to Australia, for instance, means your pet needs specific health paperwork and an export certificate that has to be signed off within a set window before the flight. Pets going to the UK or Europe need a rabies vaccination done at least 21 days before they fly. Every country has its own rulebook, and missing even one thing can mean your pet either can’t travel at all or ends up stuck in quarantine on the other end.

This is exactly why we handle the logistics end-to-end at Airport Pets. We work with your preferred airline, confirm your pet is booked on the same flight as you wherever possible, and take care of all the paperwork so nothing slips through the cracks.

What Actually Needs to Be in Order Before the Flight

There’s a bit of a checklist that needs ticking before any pet takes to the skies, and it’s worth knowing what’s involved even if someone else is handling it for you.

Your pet needs to be microchipped, which is non-negotiable for international travel. They’ll also need a health certificate from a vet, confirming they’re fit to fly, and, depending on the route, an MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) veterinary inspection may be required within a specific window before departure. IATA-approved travel crates are mandatory, and the crate size needs to be appropriate for your pet’s size, so they have enough room to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

At Airport Pets, we only use IATA-approved crates that are individually sized to suit each animal, because comfort during travel isn’t a luxury; it’s the baseline. We’ve seen what happens when pets travel in poorly fitted crates, and it’s something we’re passionate about getting right every time.

The Breed and Size Factor

Not every pet qualifies for every flight, and this is worth knowing early. Certain breeds, particularly brachycephalic dogs (the flat-faced ones like Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs) and similar cat breeds, face restrictions on some airlines due to their higher sensitivity to temperature and pressure changes during travel. Some airlines won’t take them at all, while others have specific seasonal or route-based rules.

Larger dogs that can’t fit in the cabin will always travel in the hold, and for very large breeds, there are additional crate specifications to meet. None of this means they can’t travel; it just means the planning needs a bit more thought. We’ve helped transport Irish Wolfhounds, English Bulldogs, and everything in between, so if you’re worried your pet might be a tricky case, we’ve almost certainly seen it before.

Pre-Flight Boarding

For international travel, there’s usually a window of time before the flight where your pet needs to be checked in, inspected, and ready to go, and this can sometimes be a day or two before you’re actually flying.

We have our own on-site boarding facility, Brookby Lodge, which is right near Auckland Airport and offers a comfortable place for pets to stay in the lead-up to their flight. It means they’re local, settled, and well looked after in the final stretch before departure, rather than being rushed from your home to the airport at the last minute. Pet owners who book pre-flight boarding through us also get reduced rates, which is a nice little bonus when you’re already spending on travel.

So, Can Your Pet Be on the Same Flight as You?

Yes, and in most cases, we can make that happen. That’s genuinely what we aim for, and in many situations it’s exactly what we arrange. Relocating overseas with a pet doesn’t have to mean your animal goes on a different flight, or a different day, or through some complicated separate process. With the right planning and the right team handling the details, your pet can be right there on the same aircraft as you, cared for every step of the way.

The emotional side of this matters too, by the way. We know that handing your pet over at the airport and watching them go in a different direction, even briefly, is genuinely hard. It’s not being dramatic; it’s just loving your animal. And that’s exactly the kind of thing we keep in mind with everything we do.
